Florida does not license individual auto mechanics — the Florida Motor Vehicle Repair Act (F.S. 559.904) only requires repair shops to register with FDACS ($50 for shops with up to 5 repair employees, more for larger shops, renewed every 2 years). The exception is Miami-Dade County, which requires technicians to register locally as certified or apprentice mechanics, pass a competency test, and complete 16 hours of continuing education per year. Everywhere else in the state, voluntary ASE certification is what employers look for.
