Florida licenses electrical contractors at the state level through the DBPR Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board, but there is no statewide journeyman license — journeyman and master cards are issued by county boards (Miami-Dade, Broward, Hillsborough, and Pinellas each run their own programs). You can work as an electrician under a licensed contractor without your own state license; to contract independently you need the Certified Electrical Contractor license, which takes roughly 4 years of documented experience and a Pearson VUE state exam. Registered apprenticeship hours count toward both the county cards and the contractor experience requirement.
Official source: Florida Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board (Department of Business and Professional Regulation) · Exam: State Certified Electrical Contractor exam administered by Pearson VUE; county journeyman exams administered by local licensing boards · Typical requirement: Certified EC: generally 4+ years of qualifying experience (several paths, including apprenticeship, supervisory experience, or education/experience combinations) plus financial responsibility and insurance; county journeyman cards typically require ~4 years / 8,000 hours (Miami-Dade accepts 3 years)
