Diesel Mechanics licensing in New York: No license — certification expected

New York regulates the shop, not the mechanic: any business repairing vehicles for pay must be a registered NYS DMV motor vehicle repair shop, but individual diesel techs need no state license. Mechanics who perform annual NYS safety/emissions inspections must additionally be DMV-certified inspectors. Beyond that, voluntary ASE T-series certification is what employers expect.

Official source: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (Bureau of Consumer and Facility Services / Office of Vehicle Safety) · Exam: None required to work as a mechanic. NYS inspector certification exam only if performing state inspections. Voluntary ASE T-series is the norm. · Typical requirement: No training hours or license for mechanics. The shop registers with the NYS DMV (Form VS-1, proof of premises, sales tax authority, workers' comp). Becoming a certified motor vehicle inspector (for inspection work only) runs through DMV certification.
