Michigan licenses HVAC contracting at the state level: LARA's Bureau of Construction Codes issues the Mechanical Contractor License under the Forbes Mechanical Contractors Act, with separate classifications for HVAC equipment, hydronics, refrigeration, and heating/AC service. Each classification requires a minimum of 3 years of experience and its own PSI exam (70% to pass). Technicians employed by a licensed mechanical contractor do not need an individual state license, and apprenticeship time counts toward the experience requirement.
Official source: Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Bureau of Construction Codes — Mechanical Division · Exam: Must pass a PSI-administered examination for each work classification sought (70% passing). · Typical requirement: Minimum 3 years of experience in each work classification applied for.
