46 schools in North Carolina offer diesel mechanics-related programs, compared below on official cost, completion, and earnings data. Federal program data groups diesel mechanics with automotive technology and aviation maintenance — schools below may offer any of these.
North Carolina does not license diesel mechanics. The only state credential is the safety/emissions inspection mechanic license from the NCDMV License & Theft Bureau — needed solely to perform state inspections and earned through a short approved course (8 hours for emissions) and an exam. For repair work, voluntary ASE T-series certification is what employers expect.
Official source: N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, License & Theft Bureau (inspection licensing only; no general mechanic license) · Exam: None for repair work. State inspection mechanic exam only for the inspection credential. Voluntary ASE T-series is the industry standard. · Typical requirement: No hours or license for diesel repair itself. The inspection mechanic license (forms LT-300/LT-310) requires an approved course — 8 hours for emissions inspector certification — plus an exam and a criminal-history review.
