Pennsylvania does not license auto mechanics — anyone can work in general repair with no state credential. The one state certification is for performing Pennsylvania's annual safety inspections: PennDOT requires an approved course (about 12 hours), a written exam, and a hands-on tactile test under 67 Pa. Code 175.28, with periodic recertification. Outside inspection work, voluntary ASE certification is the industry standard employers look for.

Inspection mechanics must be 18+, hold a valid driver's license for each vehicle class they will inspect, and complete the approved course; recertification exam required roughly every 5 years.
