Medical Assisting licensing in New York: No license required

New York does not license medical assistants, and NYSED's official guidance is the most restrictive of any large state: MAs may not give injections or vaccines, administer medications, or perform any task requiring medical judgment - those remain limited to licensed professionals, and even nationally certified MAs get no additional authority. MAs in NY handle vitals, ECGs, specimen collection, and administrative work under physician supervision. Legislation to create a registered medical assistant credential (S5720) has been proposed but not enacted as of mid-2026.

Official source: New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions · Exam: No state exam. Voluntary national exams (CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA)) are common employer preferences but grant no extra scope in NY. · Typical requirement: No state minimum - but NY sharply limits what MAs may do: no injections/vaccinations, no medication administration, no IVs, no triage. Permitted: vitals, ECGs, specimen collection, suture removal, dressing changes, admin work. Typical training remains a 9-12 month certificate.
