Texas requires a state license from the Texas Board of Nursing to work as a vocational nurse — the title here is Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), not LPN. You must graduate from a board-approved vocational nursing program (typically about 12 months), pass a fingerprint background check, and pass both the NCLEX-PN and the Texas Nursing Jurisprudence Exam. Texas is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so a Texas multistate license can also be used in other compact states.
Official source: Texas Board of Nursing · Exam: NCLEX-PN plus the Texas Nursing Jurisprudence Examination · Typical requirement: Graduation from a Texas BON-approved vocational nursing program (typically about 12 months, roughly 1,400 clock hours); fingerprint criminal background check; application via the Texas Nurse Portal
